** Postponed ** Identity Cloud Planned Maintenance - 03 August 2022 Release Notice - Week 32 (China & Japan Regions)
Scheduled Maintenance Report for Akamai Identity Cloud
Completed
** Update - Maintenance Postponed **

The Akamai Identity Cloud team is dedicated to providing a secure, performant and highly scalable solution. A critical part of that mission is keeping the platform up to date, running the latest, most secure elements from our hosting service provider (AWS). On occasion, the necessary upgrades require a period of downtime, which is the case with the database upgrades scheduled for August 1st through August 9th.

Keeping our customers informed well in advance of any change to the platform is also a key consideration. Based on feedback from our customer base, it's become clear that our communications can be improved as many customers were surprised, and therefore unprepared for the end user impact. Given that, Akamai has made the decision to postpone the AWS required database upgrade until a future date, likely late August or early September. Akamai will share additional details in the coming weeks.

Scheduled
From August 1 through August 9, 2022, the Identity Cloud Engineering team will be performing major updates to databases that store end user profiles. These updates will require 30 to 60 minutes of downtime depending on the complexity of the upgrade.

What
The Identity Cloud databases that store the end user profile records will be upgraded to a newer major version of PostgreSQL. This upgrade will take the databases offline for 30 to 60 minutes. During the upgrade, end users will not be able to register or login, and customers will not be able to access records by using the API.
This operation shouldn't be confused with a minor upgrade that typically requires approximately 60 seconds of downtime. This is a major version upgrade that will require 30 to 60 minutes of downtime.

Why
Every 3 to 4 years, databases within the Identity Cloud need to go through a major upgrade in order to remain on supported versions of PostgreSQL. AWS requires outgoing PostgreSQL versions to be upgraded by November 11, 2022. If databases are not upgraded prior to Nov 11, AWS will upgrade them automatically soon after. Performing this upgrade now allows the databases to remain on current versions of PostgreSQL for another 3 to 4 years.

Timing
Given the November 11, 2022 hard date, Akamai is planning to perform these upgrades during low customer activity for the year; this is typically the end of summer before customers start to prepare for their fall and winter campaigns.

Impact
The actual upgrade takes place on AWS but is initiated by Akamai. In our testing, each database will typically take about 20 minutes to complete the upgrade. However, experience shows that a few of the databases being upgraded will take longer, so we try to set customer expectations to a 30 to 60 minute window. During this time, the database will be offline, which prevents the following activities:
Registration
Authentication
API access to records
Users who are logged in and already have a session should remain logged in and have access.

Project Timeline
Akamai will perform the upgrades during region-specific low traffic times. The upgrades will take place over the course of several days, which enables Akamai to target specific regions at specific times, and to learn from each region along the way.
Additional maintenance details will be shared via the Identity Cloud Status Page service. For more information please visit: https://identitydocs.akamai.com/home/major-upgrade-scheduled-for-august.
